This morning at 0914 hrs (Mountain time) we pulled chocks in Alliance NE and headed east on highway 2 towards Kearney NE, our next stop. We had quite a bit of cloudiness with some rain on the way over, and then some sunshine to go with it. We chose Highway 2 east out of Alliance as it is considered the "Nebraska Scenic Byway - Sand Hills Journey".
Sand Hills and trains for miles and miles
About 100 miles east of Alliance we crossed back into Central Daylight time zone!
Here is a clip from Doreen's iPhone of a section of our route today. Looks like the surface of the moon!
Sand hills for as far as you can see
Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Railway is the product of nearly 400 different railroad lines that merged or were acquired over the past 170 years.
Hundreds of railway cars loaded with coal. Train after train.
The further east we traveled, the greener things got. We stopped at Mullen for a potty break and fuel in Merna As we rolled into Broken Bow, a familiar site came into view! Casey's - TACO PIZZA!!
We did not get a picture but as we arrived in Kearney another very familiar site came into view - HyVee grocery store! We are definitely getting closer to home!
We arrived at Kearney RV Park at 1520 hrs Central Daylight Time after driving 234 miles, which is right at five hours, a full day for us. I did not get any pictures of the campground yet as it started raining as we rolled in and set up. The campground is situated on a lake and our site overlooks the lake. The sites are long, full hook-up, pull-throughs. I was a bit concerned about noise from I-80 which is not far south, but we can't hear it at all.
Tomorrow bright and early I will head a few blocks to the local Chrysler RAM dealership for an oil change (yes, I have an appointment this time LOL). Then we will start on our list of things to see and do in and around Kearney NE over the next three days, including:
- G.W. Frank Museum of History
- Trains and Rails Museum
- Fort Kearney Museum
- Nebraska Firefighter's Museum
- Great Platte River Road Archway Monument
- Classic Car Collection
- Fort Kearney State Historical Park
- Pioneer Village (Minden NE)
- Audubon Sanctuary of the Sand Hill Crane
- Kearney Raceway Park (may not be active while we are here)
