The lower loop of our trip is just about done! We departed McConnell Air Force Base at 0923 hrs this morning and headed up I-35 towards Kansas City. We had a great stay at Wichita and as we said yesterday, should have stayed longer. Doreen took this photo of a coin that was imbedded in the concrete slab at our campsite there at the FamCamp. Looks like the Civil Engineer Prime BEEF team did the concrete work when they developed this campground. This is a Civil Engineer challenge coin which is also a beverage opener. It says, "Mess with the Bull, Get the Horns!"
On the way to Independence MO we just made one stop at a rest area for a potty break about two thirds into the trip.
I am very deliberate about my trip and route planning. I spend a lot of time making sure we are good from a height standpoint, etc since our coach is 13 ft 4 in tall, weighs nearly 15,000 lbs and is 34 ft 11 in long not including the truck. So I like to know where ever we go we can get out. As we rolled into Independence, the camp ground web site directed us up a certain street. My Garmin Deslcam GPS knows our height, width, length, weight, etc etc and routes us around obstructions including overhead obstructions. It was trying it's best to take us further east but the campground instructions told us to turn up that street which we did. Mistake. As soon as we turned I knew we had problems. From my perspective there is no way we would have made it under the bridge ahead of us. I could not pull up close, or we would have really had issues so I bailed just after making the turn and we pulled into an abandoned gas station and were able to turn around and reroute. I had Doreen take a picture and now, after the fact, zooming in, it actually says 14 ft 6 in but it is extremely hard to read especially from a distance and I still doubt it's accuracy. Monday I will call their Public Works Department and discuss the matter with them. I am glad we bailed on that and turned around.
So arriving at the campground I was not pleased since it was their web site that headed us up that road. I should have listened to my Garmin! Lesson learned but at least we did not become a statistic and our roof is intact.
We arrived at the Campus RV Park at 1404 hrs after traveling 209 miles. This is stop #15 out of 37. We will be here until 4 July when we head home to Prairie Flower campground at Saylorville Lake, just a few miles from our house. The Campus RV Park began as a church campground for the Community of Christ church. In 1994, the park officially evolved into a business that continues to serve those traveling from all around the World.
The majority of the camp sites are back-in along a straight line, with just a very few exceptions. They are spaced closely. When searching for a campground proximity was important, so we could tours the various sites and also attend a Kansas City Royals baseball game without a lengthy commute. This is not the ultimate campground but the location makes it a good fit for us.
While we are here we will revisit the Harry S Truman Library and Museum, take in a Kansas City Royals baseball game, National World War I Memorial and Museum, the Negro League Baseball Museum, The American Jazz Museum, visit with a great high school friend of ours, possibly see one of our little league baseball kids (not a kid anymore LOL) and many other things. We also have a list of minor things to get done in and around the RV plus we are both looking forward to relaxing a bit.
