11 May 2022 - Arrived at Caboose Lake Campground in Remington IN

 11 May

This morning we said "adios" to Wapello Iowa and headed south and east to our next stop, the Caboose Lake Campground in Remington IN.  We pulled chocks about 0921 hrs and drove south to Burlington where we crossed the Mississippi River and headed into Illinois.

Travel through Illinois was pretty much uneventful.  They need to spend some money to repair US 34.  Good thing we have a good suspension under our Alliance fifth wheel!

We stopped a couple times, once for a potty break and once for fuel in Lexington IL.  We were going to drive it on one tank, but I was ready for a break at Lexington IL and diesel was $5.189.  I'm glad I filled when we did because diesel is $5.55 here at Remington IN.  After fueling I parked the coach towards the exit of the gas station in a dead end area, and Doreen went inside to fetch the paper fuel receipt and get us a couple wraps for lunch.  As we hung around the entrance of our coach, chewing on our wraps, up pulls a policeman and he suggested we move as we were parked in a no parking zone!!  What?!  I never saw the sign, but why would I as it was facing the opposite direction!  Yes, though, guilty as charged since I was illegally parked.   He was real nice about it and went on his way, so we finished up our lunch and moved on down the road!

After leaving Lexington we continued up I-55 to US 24 at Chenoa and headed eastbound towards out campground.  We crossed historic Route 66 which we followed quite a ways coming back from Los Angeles in 2019.  Route 66 is a trip all of it's own!

Just into Chenoa Doreen noticed a pickup truck and a Shriner selling Vidalia onions so we had to stop!  We always buy several bags each year to support the Shriners, but the past few years we have been traveling and not home to take delivery.  So this was a real treat for us.  If you have never had a Vidalia onion before, they come from the area around Vidalia GA and the onions are super sweet.  They are great for sandwiches and we love to grill them too.  So, we found a big area where we could pull over with the fifth wheel, and we walked over to get the inions. We always give the Shriners a good donation too.

We arrived at Remington IN and Caboose Lake Campground at 1538 hrs, 274 miles later.  That is a fairly long day for us.  All together with fuel and potty stops, we were on the road for 6 hrs and 17 minutes.  That is enough!

We checked in quickly and made our way to our campsite.  We have a nice long pull-through full-hookup site with a great view of the lake.

There is an elaborate water park area with various inflatables, slides, etc.  It appears the water park does not open until 1 June.

Looking down the shore.  These camp sites face the lake.  Ours is across the road.

The sites have a paved patio area and picnic table

The winds were still stiff but tame enough for the flagpole.

After dinner we all went on a walk and found the caboose!  Yes, there is a caboose at Caboose Lake Campground!!  The railroad runs right by the end of the campground and there are several old rail cars there.  The little red caboose is equipped to support three guests and can be rented for camping!

Here are a few other campground pictures:

A view from a porch on one of the cabins you can rent

Several cabins on the south end of the lake

Nice wide roads and many seasonal campers here.

We changed our plans and are only staying here two nights rather than three.  This puts us into Elkhart on Friday so we can attend our grand daughter's volleyball tournament this weekend.  We don't have any plans for tomorrow other than getting caught up on the laundry and grocery shopping.

Thanks for checking in on us!
