Today we headed out to return a couple items at Ace Hardware and then we went to the downtown area of Clear Lake so that Doreen could shop at Larson's Mercantile which is touted as Clear Lake’s premier variety and gift store. They have about everything under the sun including souvenirs. It reminds me of the old variety stores in DeWitt, the town where I grew up. Doreen always checks out the fabric area to see if they have any camping-related fabric for her sewing addiction :-)
We picked out a couple gifts for a special friend who Doreen camped with up here back in her youth and we headed down to the Post Office to get them in the mail. On the way back to the truck we passed the restaurant that we were going to this evening until we found out they were not open today.
We stopped in to the local Veterans of Foreign Wars post for a beverage before departing the downtown area. They have a beautiful post here. From the VFW's web site, "The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States is a nonprofit veterans service organization comprised of eligible veterans and military service members from the active, guard and reserve forces. We trace our roots back to 1899 when veterans of the Spanish-American War (1898) and the Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902) founded local organizations to secure rights and benefits for their service." I am a life-member of the VFW and also a member of the American Legion. The Clear Lake post is open to the public and they serve meals and host special events.
Back at the campground, after lunch I worked on a couple projects on the RV and took a walk with Liberty. Before we knew it, it was time to head down to The Other Place pizza restaurant to meet Mike and Narelle O'Brien for dinner.
At 6pm we met Narelle and Mike at The Other Place and had a great meal and a great time! Narelle has just returned from a trip home for her - Australia, so we were interested how her trip went. Doreen, Mike and I were all in the same high school class in Cedar Falls, graduating in 1973. We laughed and laughed about our high school hi-jinx and talked about the fact that next year will be 50 years since we graduated, so the planning needs to commence on the reunion. Unfortunately we were too busy gabbing and no pictures were taken. One of the things Doreen and I enjoy the most about our travels is reconnecting with friends like Mike and Narelle. Thanks guys for the great time!
Right now we have no special plans for tomorrow. The weather is supposed to be pretty descent so we may take an extended hike with Liberty. Saturday we head to Forest City for Dan's graduation, then Sunday we leave, so tomorrow is really our last day here.
That's it for now. Thanks for riding along!
